Neighbours' houses - best eating outlets
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of life away from home is food. Well, as they say in some jargon that I'm supposed to be familiar with, cooking is no big ISSUE. Can't exactly say it is not. One thing is that cooking is definitely my forte but unfortunately time isn't exactly on my side. Now what happens on weekends is entirely a different story.
Getting up to the aromas of the tempering from the adjacent flat is not exactly my idea of one of those good mornings!! Especially when your stomach is working overtime to make those familiar growling noises--good old hunger pangs begging to break the fast. Putting a lot of effort I get myself out of the mat till the balcony to brush my teeth. One aunty peeks out of the window from an opposite flat to the balcony and asks,"Good morning! Had your breakfast??" (Yeah rite!! You are brushing your teeth and what kind of an answer does she expect?? Who is giving me a breakfast in bed?)Politely I try to say,"No.Got up just now"-stating the obvious.
The next dialogue perks me up immediately. She says,"I made Poha..want to eat??" (Why not???!!!?)I could have jumped out ..Trying to be decent about it, with a meek face I say,"Hey thanks, but only if it's not disturbing you or something".. Intelligent me knew that there could be no negative answer to it. :) Whatever, breakfast was superb that day.
Lunch is anyway left to the mercy of the cafeteria guys back in the office. So you cannot exactly try to get alecky there.
Forgot to mention another aunty in the apartment. This lady is from Andhra Pradesh and that too, hails from my native place.(although it was my birth place only and I was never brought up there, I put so much of enthu into our conversations- with high expectations and definitely an ulterior motive-FOOD).
One night when I came from the office just then, she gives me a shout in Telugu,"Deepthi, enti ee time ki ochaavu?? ippudu vanta cheskuni tintaava?? paapam-minappattu vesa..avakaaya undi..illaga ocheseyyi paiki..tinesi veldu".
I'll do the translations with pleasure,"Deepthi, how come you are so late-(It's only 9 in the night!).Will you cook now?Poor thing. I made minapattu-(its a thick dosa kinds famous in Andhra) with Avakaya(pickle).Come up..eat and go)"
I wont bother to tell you how tasty it was and all! After all neighbours are next to gods or rather next to moms..undoubtedly best cooks if you know how to play your cards right..you know what I mean????? :)

hi Deepthi, when I started reading this post i found it is very humorous because these are the things even I do in the week ends.A small change is that I go to my friend's home(most of the times they won't call me)with only one intention of eating food.
